The project is coming to an end but the blog will still be continued.
The fish is going into the last stages of its mummification and will soon be ready to remove from the natron. We will be making a sarcophagus out of wood for the fish and then placing the fish into it before handing in the project, as well as a link to this blog, to the teachers.
This looks fantastic!
ReplyDeleteI would love to know why there is bicarbonate of soda in the natron!
Hi Big John. I did some research on this and I found out that in Eygypt sodium bicarbonate is a naturally occurring mineral which is in the sand so in time they may have realised that this helped with the process. Sodium bicarb is also used for cleaning as it is good at de-greasing. It also changes the ph level, so that it makes it harder for bacteria to grow. So this might be why it is helpful. Some people but bicarb of soda in their fridges to absorb smells. I don't know if that works with mummification too. One post I read said that in Germany, sodium bircarbonate is called Natron but I don't know if that is true. Hope this is answers your question.
